Representation in TV dramas

Representations:

Dominant reading: In this picture from casualty male dominance is presented. The nurse is faced the other way to show she is ‘irrelevant’.

Oppositional reading: Other people could view this image as ethnic minority and the people facing the camera being better nurses/doctors.

Dominant reading:  In this picture from Eastenders age is represented. They are trying to suggest that older people feel the cold as she is wearing a coat. She is also saving money in her tin like she doesn’t trust the banks; older people tend to do that.

Oppositional reading:
Other people could view this as her about to leave the house so age has nothing to do with it.

Dominant reading: In this picture from misfits you would see the man in the middle to be the ‘leader’ and very into his position as he is dressed very smartly and groomed.
Negotiated reading: I think the main focus decreases from the middle and the men on the end do not really care about the position when the man in the middle looks very into his role.

Skins:

Dominant reading:
This picture from skins is representing many different things. The three people who are at the centre of the image and appearing at the front are presented as the main characters. The other characters are further away and not really looking in the direction of the camera, this could suggest their importance in the show. The characters looking in a different direction are seen as ‘not relevant’ to the tv drama and could appear less.

Oppositional reading:
People could see this as being unfair to the other characters in the background and they could feel unappreciated. Many people could disagree with the image and say it is sexist as there are 3 men towards the front and only 1 female which could suggest male dominance and sexism.

Negotiated reading:
People could see the people closest to the front of the image being the main characters however they might disagree with some of the representations shown. For example they might disagree with the other characters being so distant and facing a different way as they might see that as being ‘disrespectful’ to those people and ignorant.
